MWC is Glanbia’s state-of-the-art cheese and whey plant in St. Johns, Michigan. The plant is the recipient of the 2021 Dairy Foods Magazine, Dairy Plant of the Year Award. According to Dairy Foods: “To win the award, the plant must have achieved outstanding accomplishments in one or more of the following categories between Jan. 1, 2020, and June 1, 2021: plant expansion/retrofit, new construction, sustainability, food safety, employee safety, employee training programs, plant efficiencies, coronavirus-related efforts, new technology and/or other specified area(s) of excellence.

Through its 2019 acquisition of Watson, Glanbia Nutritionals has strengthened its capabilities and knowledge in nutrient optimization technologies. This allows them to address the formulation requirements of today’s increasingly sophisticated supplement, beverage and food product applications. TechVantage™ functionally optimized nutrient technologies provide optimizations in color/clarity, taste, stability, dispersibility and bioavailability.

Energy efficiency and overall sustainability was a key element of the project build at our newest facility, MWC. A $470 million state-of-the-art cheese and whey plant in St. Johns, Michigan, is a joint venture between Glanbia Nutritionals, Dairy Farmers of America Inc. (DFA) and Select Milk Producers Inc.  

Glanbia Nutritionals operates the facility and markets its cheese to food service companies and other cheese companies and its whey protein powders to food, beverage and supplement companies.  

We are pleased to have launched our latest Sustainability Annual Report which sets out details on our new long term sustainability strategy, Pure Food+Pure Planet. Under our new strategy, our ambition is to achieve net zero carbon emissions no later than 2050. This will see us reduce absolute emissions from our operations by a third and reduce emissions’ intensity across our dairy value chain by 25% by 2030.

Glanbia Nutritionals is upgrading its Research and Development facility in Kilkenny, Ireland and is expecting to open its doors for operation in Q3 of 2022.

The expansion of sports drinks isn’t just a U.S. phenomenon. The $21 billion global sports drink market is forecast to grow between 3-7% annually 2021 through 2025, according Euromonitor.2 While North America leads the global market at 49% of market share, the Asia-Pacific region is close behind at 32%. 

Personalised protein ready-to-mix (RTM) powders are currently a niche market but represent an opportunity due to the increasing demand for personalised foods and beverages. Protein powders make up just over half (51%) of retail sports nutrition products sales globally.1 The $11.1 billion global protein powder market is expected to see steady growth ahead at a CAGR of 8.1% from 2019 to 2024.2
