In this conversation, we speak with one of Glanbia’s scientific leaders, Katie Mikus, PhD, Director of Scientific Affairs, about the experiences, ideas, and innovations shaping the future of nutrition. From the early influences that sparked a career in science to new technologies, the discussion explores how evidence-based thinking is helping Glanbia unlock new possibilities.

What first drew you to science, and how did that early interest shape your focus on nutrition and performance? 

My passion for science began early. Growing up, I watched my father—a pharmacist—grapple with a healthcare system focused more on treating chronic disease than preventing it. Seeing that disconnect sparked a deep curiosity about how nutrition, physical activity and the environment influence human health and performance. That curiosity evolved into a career centered on understanding—and advancing—nutrition and exercise science.

What role does a company like Glanbia play in advancing evidence-based nutrition at a global scale?

Every day, we develop solutions designed to nourish, support and inspire.  We have the privilege of creating products that empower people around the world to unlock their full potential no matter where they are in their health or fitness journey, and that responsibility fuels our commitment to scientific excellence.

Which scientific and technological advances are likely to have the biggest impact on the future of nutrition? 

AI is dramatically accelerating the pace of discovery, giving us richer insight into the intricate relationships between nutrition, biology, health and performance. Alongside advancements in personalised nutrition, host-microbiome interactions, and precision fermentation, we are entering an era where nutrition can be more targeted, effective and sustainable than ever before. These innovations will redefine how consumers engage with foods and dietary supplements—and allow companies like ours to deliver solutions with unprecedented precision and impact.

What factors have been most important in supporting your development as a scientist and leader? 

I have benefited from brilliant, dedicated mentors, early‑career training grants and programs, and ongoing opportunities to learn, grow and lead.  Collectively, these experiences have shaped my commitment to cultivating environments where diverse scientific talent is supported, empowered and able to thrive.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future at Glanbia? 

We are entering a new era where deeper scientific understanding and more sophisticated technologies will unlock opportunities to impact consumer health through nutrition. The potential to innovate at a global scale—to bring forward solutions that meaningfully improve lives—is profoundly motivating, and being part of a team dedicated to redefining better nutrition—creatively, responsibly and inclusively—is truly energising.
