Thuy Truong: Spotlight on women in science

Thuy is a Quality Control Manager based in California where she collaborates daily with a cross-functional team, including members from QA, Production, R&D, PSM, and Customer Service.

Her role is to ensure that Glanbia products meet quality control standards and are delivered to customers on time. She is also responsible for overseeing lab operations, maintaining employee safety, and ensuring compliance with quality systems.

“On a typical day, my team and I handle tasks such as sampling and testing raw materials and finished goods, troubleshooting instruments, addressing out-of-spec products, resolving customer complaints, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.”

Growing up in the countryside of Vietnam, Thuy was surrounded by the wonders of nature, with little more than makeshift toys crafted from anything she could find. The simplicity of rural life ignited her imagination and curiosity.

“One of the most captivating memories I have was stargazing on the front porch of my home in our remote village, where clear skies revealed the breathtaking Milky Way. This sparked my fascination with astronomy and the broader mysteries of the universe. However, my journey into STEM began when I took an elective course during my undergrad in Sports Nutrition and it quickly captured my interest. The science behind how food and nutrition impact human health was both fascinating and empowering, leading me to choose it as my major. That decision marked a critical moment in my academic journey, and I knew that I had found my passion -one that has driven me to pursue a career in this field ever since.”

Offering advice to young women considering a career in science, Thuy says never underestimate the power of connection and curiosity.

“Everyone you meet has a unique perspective or knowledge you don't yet have, so seize every opportunity to learn from those around you. Ask questions, don’t be afraid to seek mentorship. STEM is a dynamic, ever-evolving field, and to thrive, you must embrace a mindset of continuous growth. Stay curious. Be fearless in seeking new challenges, and trust that every step, no matter how small, will take you closer to your goals. The world needs your unique voice and your bold ideas.”
